Winter Winelands Wonders – June to September

Stellenbosch is no sleepy hollow in winter. Whilst its vineyards are having their well-earned sleep after the harvest season, the town is still alive and buzzing with a smorgasbord of experiential things to do, see and savour during the colder months.

As a winter Winelands destination, Stellenbosch lures with perfect weather conditions with day temperatures ranging between 15-20 degrees Celsius and crisp clear skies. On rainy days the town offers numerous places with cozy fire places to enjoy superb food or curl up with a good book and enjoy a glass of wine.   

This is underlined by the town’s annual Winter Winelands Programme which invites enthusiasts to swap their winter hibernation for a sensory sojourn in the vibrant City of Oaks and to immerse themselves in ultimate “bucket list” encounters from June until September.

Whether you are looking for a romantic mid-week escape or a weekend breakaway with the kids, this winter initiative makes it possible for everyone to come and discover the winter wonders of the Winelands. Three tiers of value-added packages are available, ranging from budget-friendly, to top end stay-and-play experiences that encapsulate the bustling pulse, unique cultural mix and multifaceted offerings of Stellenbosch.

96 Winery Road runs their “May Baby” special as they turn 19. They are welcoming all fellow May babies to pop in and receive a standard main course on the house when they order a starter or dessert Mondays to Saturdays (ID books must be presented) 

Lanzerac is offering a host of accommodation specials valid from 1 April to 30 September 2015: there is the simple Bed & Breakfast Option R1 095 per person sharing, Dinner, Bed & Breakfast at R1 365 per person sharing, and the Winter Spa Deluxe Gourmet Option at R1 765 per person sharing 

The Country Guesthouse and 96 Winery Road are offering a May special of a three course set menu at 96 Winery Road Restaurant and one night accommodation and a continental breakfast for two at R1 150.00 per night.

Le Pommier is running numerous specials for winter, including a Winter Wine Weekend Special of dinner, bed & breakfast and a wine tasting at R800 per person sharing per night (valid from 1 May to 31 July), and a Romantic Winter Getaway including bed & breakfast in a room with a fireplace, turn down service and a wine tasting at R650 per person sharing (valid from 1 May to 31 August) 

Spier is running a few accommodation and farm specials this winter – Farm Freedom (for the family) from R2 365 per night for two adults and two children for a stay of two nights. Farm Therapy for Two is a farm food experience for couples starting at R3 950 for two nights. Winter Foodie Feast encompasses log fires, farm made food and wines, and a tasting of limited release wines by Spier’s cellar master Frans K Smit at R2 400 for two adults, and The Greens and The Vines package includes a round of golf at De Zalze Golf Course from R5 080 for two adults

Kleine Zalze is offering a Terroir Package consisting of one night’s accommodation at Kleine Zalze Lodge on a bed and breakfast basis, a Winter Plate at Terroir Restaurant, a complimentary wine tasting and a complimentary bottle of wine on arrival. Valid from 1 May to 30 September 2015, starting at R650 per person sharing per night.

The Winter Plate special at the award-winning Terroir restaurant is a hearty meal with the option of adding extra courses from the a la carte menu, as well as a generous glass of award-winning Kleine Zalze Vineyard Selection wine.

Available for lunch or dinner, this special runs from 1 May – 30 September 2015 at a cost of R195 per person. * Please note that Terroir will be closed from 29 June to 14 July 2015 for an annual winter break.

Hartenberg Wine Estate has launched their new winter lunch menu with the option of a three-course (R195) or four-course (R245) tasting menu.

Cuvee, Simonsig Estate’s signature restaurant, is offering winter specials available until 31 August. Order the chicken and prawn laksa with jasmine rice, mint and coriander including a glass of adelberg or adelblanc at R165 or the Jerusalem artichoke soup with sour cream toast and pickled sjimeji, including a glass of adelberg or adelblanc at R60, and if both are ordered as a starter and main you will only pay R200.

Jordan Wines launched their stunning new luxury accommodation at the beginning of the year and they are running a special for winter until 30 September where visitors stay for three nights but only pay for two.

Waterkloof Estate is running with a Winter Platter from the end of July to the end of September. The Winter Platter features homemade meat terrine, the estate’s own organic olives, toasty bread and a trio of cheeses, on offer at the tasting lounge from 10h00 till 16h30 (Wednesdays to Sundays) and costs R130.

At Bistro13, apart from the new winter a la carte menu, there will be a Feed Me menu discounted for winter to R225 per person, allowing guests to explore five dishes off the menu in smaller portions. The Saturday night steak special offers diners a sirloin or onglet steak with hearty veg and a glass of Welmoed wine for R115 per person (valid until 31 August 2015).

In addition, all winter diners will get a wine taster with lunch or dinner. Special winter event evenings run every second Thursday when Bistro 13 opens its doors to new food experiences, and they introduce the Lucky 13 Burger, making an exclusive appearance on the menu every Wednesday evening (until the end of August) .
