Ease out the last minute rush of back to school and get out with the kids to renew your spirits before the start of the new school year or to deal with the realization of being back at it. Here are my top activities, perfect for the kids and family to expererience and share in together, to reconnect and refresh.

Jonkershoek Nature reserve – Cape Nature

An unforgettable experience for the family is to share in the spirit of adventure in Stellenbosch’s magnificent outdoors. A visit to the breath taking, rolling hills and majestic mountains of Jonkershoek nature reserve is an absolute must for the family. Take a moderate hike, safe for the children up to the first and second waterfalls or hike along the river to find yourselves a secluded spot for the day. They also have a myriad of child friendly activities such as canoeing, horse riding, donkey cart rides and more. Book the family a short stay at their on site accommodation for a weekend of relaxing before school starts.

Tokara wine farm & Deli

Tokara wine farm and deli is both great for adults, teens and the kids. The children can test their senses when experiencing an olive oil tasting, muse on the art peppered across the estate and run through the olive groves. Once that’s done head over to the deli for some delicious eats, breakfast or lunch, while the kids play amongst the garden sculptures and playground lawns, swings and jungle gym for the kids. The views aren’t bad either.

Stellenbosch miniature Toy museum

This one is definitately for the kids and the kid in you. A visit to the Stellenbosch Toy museum takes you back to an enchanted time made up of antique dolls, cuddle toys, miniature houses and cars to name a few. Guided tours take place daily where the kids can learn some unique history.

Adventure Shop

Situated in the town’s Black Horse centre, this one stop shop for adventure is sure to have something the whole family can enjoy. Take a guided cycle tour of the town, go on an amazing race of sorts and get the whole family to work together solving clues to find their way to and from historical landmarks. Other activities in Stellenbosch include horse riding experiences.

Middelvlei Boerbraai and Animal farm

Enjoy all the fun of this family friendly farm while they prepare you an abundant and traditional Boerbraai of South African boerewors, lamp chop, braaibroodjies and salads. The kids can try a juice tasting while the adults enjoy the real deal. Relax on the sprawling lawns and take in the sweeping hills while the kids play a myriad giant board games or meander off to feed the goats, pigs, tortoises and special wallabies. If you’re lucky the kids might even get to enjoy a tractor ride.

Vredenheim Big Cats & Game drives

Shop unique treats for the kids and family at Vredenheim’s local deli, wine tasting for the legal teens and see South Africa’s Big Cats right here in the heart of the Stellenbosch winelands when booking one of their safari game drives. Book a birthday party on their animal farm where they can interact with a variety of adorable farm animals.

Spice Route

Situated just outside of Stellenbosch. This collective of artisanal goodies has something for everyone in the family to enjoy. The kids have access to a playground on this beautiful farm or can choose to flit between biltong, chocolate and ice cream tastings before sitting down to a hearty family lunch of gourmet pizza’s or meaty burgers and fries at either of the restuarants on location.

Take the teens on a full moon hike, have them bundu bash through the mountains on some epic trail runs or mountain bike trails. Host a party on location fully catered by Delvera Café.Teach the kids the importance of conservation at the Simonsberg environmental education centre or simply book the family a mini getaway on this beautiful estate to recharge before school starts.

The Gardens at Babylonstoren

What’s not to love about this stunning farm. The kids can learn about and experience the literal fruits of sustainable farming as they engage with the plants and animal life that is so deeply interconnected on this farm. Let them run free through the sprawling gardens, climb, shriek and play in and around the beautiful play elements and sculptures and eat the goodness of organic and sustainable farming.
