A feast in the heart of the Makaron kitchen
There is no doubt that Stellenbosch is one of the most beautiful towns and wine regions in the world. The Stellenbosch Wine Routes have more than 152 member farms, each boasting impressive views and facilities to complement the quality of the wine produced. Stellenbosch has earned the title of South Africa's Gourmet Capital. Five of the six Eat Out Top 10 Restaurant nominations for 2014 from Stellenbosch are located on wine farms, with the exception of one - Makaron Restaurant at Majeka House.
Majeka House and Makaron Restaurant embrace being the exception to the rule. Here in Stellenbosch suburbia, you will find a boutique 5 star hotel where down to earth hospitality is celebrated, delicious, but unpretentious food is the focus and where a passion for good living, embodied by the hands-on owners, Lloyd van der Merwe and Karine Dequeker-van der Merwe, is contagious.
They have broken away from the white and "Cape Dutch green" mold and embraced an edgy, yet warm interior complete with cobalt blue sun loungers and one of the country's top restaurants. Majeka House is unapologetically glamarous with witty, personal little touches that is endearing.
With two companies, two busy toddlers (aged 2 and 4) and a puppy between the two of us, me and my husband do not indulge in date nights as much as we should. Majeka House was the perfect place for a little romance and to round off a week of 39th birthday celebrations, aptly dubbed "Life begins at 39".
Feasting in the heart of the Makaron kitchen was one of my most memorable dinner experiences yet. Tanja Kruger has taken Makaron to new heights. She and her passionate team transform simple, wholesome ingredients into unforgetable dishes, perfectly paired with wines from an extensive selection of local wine and MCC.
Tanja is committed to farm to fork eating with the finest selection of produce sourced locally or picked from the hotel's rapidly expanding edible garden. She remains humble, attributing the growing popularity and success of Makaron to her skilled, passionate team. Almost everything that can be homemade is produced by the talented team from preserves, cured meats to the irresistable sweet breads.
If Makaron is not crowned as one of the top 10 restaurants in this year's Eat Out Mercedes-Benz Restaurant Awards, then I am starting my own restaurant awards!
My highlights of the seven course kitchen table feast were the first course, an artwork of Ancient Grains, Cauliflower Veloute, Courgette and Romanesco, followed by the Seared Tuna with Dragon Cracker Crumble and Smoked Tofu, which has a delicious sting in its tail. My favourite dish of the evening was the Poached Free Range Chicken with dumplings, corn, buttermilk and chives. The meal was perfectly rounded off with Olive Oil Parfait served with strawberries, popped rice, beetroot and apple ice cream. The winning wine of the night for me was the 2011 Vriesenhof Grenache.
The feasting does not end with dinner... At Majeka House breakfast is king, it is no wonder then that their breakfast is hailed as the best in the Cape Winelands.
We might just make date night at Majeka House a regular thing. You should too.
