The House of J.C. Le Roux
Located in the heart of the picturesque Devon Valley, The House of J.C. Le Roux is South Africa’s leading cellar dedicated entirely to the craft of making sparkling wine. Enjoying acclaim for its passion, craftsmanship and expertise in creating fine Méthode Cap Classiques in the time-honoured French style as well as the more playful sparkling wines, J.C. Le Roux offers an exquisite taste of the Stellenbosch Winelands for every palate.
After an extensive makeover in 2012, The House of J.C. Le Roux now offers a stylish new tasting room complete with an outside deck for sun seekers. This attractive venue is perfect for the casual visitor or for those wishing to book a private tasting room for special occasions. The signature nougat tasting experience and meringues and marshmallows paired with five MCC and sparkling wines remain ever popular staples. The Le Venue restaurant also received a glamorous new look with an inviting al fresco deck. Oysters and sparkling wine are great taste partners that feature regularly on the lunch menu.
Cellar & winemaker
The first J.C. Le Roux sparkling wine, a Sauvignon Blanc, was made at in 1983, followed by South Africa’s first Pinot Noir Méthode Cap Classique in 1985. Today, there is a wide range of Cap Classique and sparkling wines to suit all palates. The grapes used in the Méthode Cap Classique collection are handpicked then whole bunch pressed and only the best of the juice – known as the cuvée – is used.
Under the watchful eye of Cellarmaster Elunda Basson, the delicate bubbles take shape in the temperature controlled cellar. Her prestige cuvée, Scintilla 2003, made only in exceptional vintages with prolonged maturation on the lees for over seven years, outshone all other contenders last year when it was crowned the 2012 Amorim Méthode Cap Classique champion, and won best sparkling wine at this year’s Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show.
To add even more variety to the J.C. Le Roux range, a non-alcoholic alternative for the much loved sparkling white Le Domaine was launched in 2012, followed this year by La Fleurette Non-Alcoholic, a delightful sparkling blush that is sure to match its popular alter ego.
Elunda, who studied at the University of Stellenbosch and the Elsenburg Agricultural College, honed her winemaking skills in several top wine cellars in South Africa, as well as leading Champagne houses in France.
She describes her winemaking philosophy as follows: “I believe the winemaker is the vehicle through which the product of the vine is transformed into a product of pure enjoyment.”
