Something for everyone at Spier...
There is plenty to do at Spier. Whether you want to enjoy delicious wholesome food, activities in the great outdoors, taste its award-winning wine or immerse yourself in the finest contemporary South African art, there is more than enough to keep the whole family entertained and inspired.
Try award-winning wines in the tasting room while you enjoy lovely views of the Spier dam and the Helderberg Mountains. There are several tasting options, allowing you to experience Spier’s wide variety of wines, from its flagship Frans K. Smit range, to the heritage inspired 21 Gables wines. The wines can be paired with delectable treats. Before you leave, be sure to stock up on wines to take home – these are available at cellar door prices.
Enjoy lunch at Eight restaurant, where all produce used is from the Spier farm or sourced from nearby farmers. If you’d prefer to lunch on the rolling lawns, you can hand select ready-to-eat food and artisanal produce for your picnic at Eight to Go Deli; otherwise, pre-book your basket (choose from several options at picnics.spier.co.za).
Acclaimed chef PJ Vadas has brought his passion for down-to-earth deliciousness to the Werf at Spier, with the opening of the Hoghouse BBQ & Bakery in the historic Jonkershuis. Inspired by the wholesome languor of the wine farm lunch tradition, the new café allows you to eat natural farm food whilst appreciating sun-dappled heritage architecture and drinking outstanding wines on the very farm where they’re made. The Hoghouse offers breakfasts and summer lunches, with seasonal menus inspired by PJ’s love of nourishing and nostalgic recipes. The bakery and patisserie are inspired by PJ’s mentor and master baker, Markus Farbinger of the legendary Ile de Pain in Knysna.
Spier has a rich history and vibrant cultural heritage. Amble through the farm’s historic buildings including the 1822 Manor House and South Africa’s oldest dated freestanding wine cellar (which was built 1767). Spier has one of the most extensive contemporary South African art collections in the country, and a small selection is displayed in our public spaces. You can take a little bit of artistic magic home with you by purchasing a beautifully handmade gift from the Craft Market or a Creative Block artwork.
Spier has a huge focus on sustainability and protecting the environment. Stroll through the Riverwalk on the banks of the Eerste River, and visit the avenue of 230 indigenous coral trees. You can also whiz through the farm on a Segway PT – a two-wheeled, self-balancing electric vehicle – learning interesting facts about Spier’s wastewater treatment plant and its commitment to minimising its environmental impact on your journey.
Spier is the perfect environment for kids. While you enjoy lunch at Eight, they can play on the nearby wooden jungle gym or exploring the bamboo “forest”. Afterwards, take them to meet Wally the eagle at Eagle Encounters, a bird-of-prey rehabilitation and conservation project. Here they can participate in the daily flying displays and see lots of different owls, buzzards, hawks and falcons, learning how raptors keep the farm healthy and in balance.
Staying over at Spier’s award-winning hotel allows you the time to make the most of Spier’s activities. Friendly and intimate, the hotel was designed with families in mind, from its rolling lawns and courtyard swimming pools to its interleading rooms, jungle gyms and toy boxes. It’s also the perfect destination for a romantic getaway too.
Spier Hotel is the ideal place to relax whether in The Spier Spa, which offers facials and tension-melting massage, or when lounging next to your courtyard’s swimming pool. Enjoy a glass of wine on the hotel terrace at sunset before dinner at the Spier Hotel restaurant, where you’ll find only the freshest available produce on the menu.
