Delheim Estate, an esteemed Stellenbosch stalwart nestled on the slopes of the Simonsberg, blends its meticulous conservation of environmentally sustainable wine production with its passion for good food, fun and nature to offer a host of unique attractions that appeal to young and old.
At this pride and joy of the Sperling family there is a genuine feeling of gemütlichkeit (German for a sense of deep welcome) which comes from the relaxed atmosphere of this historic winelands gem which legendary winemaker and Cape wine pioneer, Spatz Sperling put on the map in the 1950s. The inimitable Spatz is also one of the three famous fearless visionaries who founded their own wine route system to entice visitors to the wine farms in the Stellenbosch region back in 1969. This lead to the official birth of the Stellenbosch Wine Route in 1971 and today Delheim remains one of the most popular Winelands destinations en route.
What makes this family-owned wine farm – where the enjoyment of an award-winning array of wines is par for the course – worth the drive, is its seasonal-inspired menu of sensory attractions that satisfy from foodies and foragers, to outdoor fanatics and fun-loving families.
During the winter months, Delheim wards off the chills with its all-time favourite cheese fondues in the candlelit cellar, where this melting pot of retro-nostalgia and fine wines are enjoyed to the sounds of jazz favourites played by a live band.
Another highlight on Delheim’s winter calendar is its exclusive Wild Mushroom Hunts, when fungi foragers, eccentric hobbyists and amateur mycologists set foot in the pine forest in search of these elusive, seasonal delicacies. While many fungi fans remain tight lipped about their favourite hunting spots, Delheim’s Nora Sperling invite enthusiasts to join her for a walk on the ‘wild side’ on the farm to indulge in some mushroom magic.
Delheim was the first wine estate in the country to serve food almost four decades ago and today its family-friendly Garden Restaurant with its stunning setting remains a firm lunchtime favourite. Think South African inspired cuisine enjoyed in a serene garden milieu, framed by towering oak trees and a breathtaking view of Table Mountain in the distance. Or one can revel in good, honest food and great company inside the cosy restaurant.
Delheim – overall winner of the Best Farming Practices category of the 2013 Nedbank Green Wine Awards – believes that everything should proceed in harmony with nature and echoes this in the way it produces its time-honoured wines, right through from the vineyards to the cellar. As a strong follower of sustainable farming, it is passionately committed to the conservation and the rehabilitation of its natural habitat and indigenous flora. Thus with their popular Green Picnics – to be leisurely enjoyed to the sounds of the flowing Klip River and abundant bird life – Delheim invites families and friends to re-connect with nature, the natural way.
Another signature Delheim drawcard, is its decadent Cupcake & Wine Pairings which comprise four exquisite cupcakes matched with a specific Delheim wine to pamper the palate and the mood.
