Van Ryn’s Distillery & Brandy Cellar
At Van Ryn’s Distillery, close to Stellenbosch, we want visitors to experience the full luxury and sumptuousness of our internationally award-winning prestige range of brandies that includes a 10-, 12-, 15 and 20-year old.
When you enter our chateau-style distillery set back from the highway, you encounter a quiet, tranquil and very welcoming space where are staff are ready to welcome you.
We offer tastings of course, but we also let you see our antique copper potstills and watch the coopers assemble the oak vats in which our brandies are aged. We also offer an exciting range of pairings, marrying the aromas, tastes and textures of our brandies with locally sourced chocolates and confections.
Settle into the plush couches where the copper potstill is fully ablaze during the winter months, or savour the tastes in the lovely, fragrant garden under shady umbrellas on lovely, warmer days.
AU.RA, a numbered, once-off edition of just 107 hand-bottled brandies, is also beautifully displayed in the tasting area of our distillery. Presented in David Reade individually blown glass decanters and housed in solid oak cases made by furniture designer James Mudge, the 30-year-old blend includes components as old as 40 years.
- Van Ryn's is South Africa’s only brandy distillery with its own cooperage, where skilled practitioners practice a dying art, making up barrels of French oak in which Van Ryn’s brandies are matured.
- Potstills in the Van Ryn's Collectors Reserve range have won the International Wine & Spirit Competition Worldwide Best Brandy title a total of five times to date, and the International Spirits Challenge Best Brandy trophy, four times.
- South Africa’s longest-matured potstill brandy, named AU.RA, is handmade at Van Ryn’s Distillery from a blend of mostly 30-year-old potstill brandies but also including some components as old as 40 years. AU.RA comes in crystal decanters blown by renowned glass artist David Reade. Their shape, which appears to be suspending the liquid gold, resembles a drop, recalling the first drop of the heart of the spirit captured in the double-distillation process. The tear silhouette is also echoed in each hand-made stopper, as well as the hand-made silver pendants that adorn each decanter. These have been made by local jewellery designer Bridget Zietkewicz. Each crystal decanter is housed in a hand-turned solid oak case, created by architect and specialist furniture designer James Mudge and is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity.
- Van Ryn’s has been awarded a 5 star accreditation with the Tourism Grading Council of South Africa annually since 2008, highlighting the outstanding quality of the experience we offer with superb attention to detail in our service levels and the luxurious decor.
