Wine and chocolate tastings in Stellenbosch

  • January 26, 2015

Chocolate and wine pairing in Stellenbosch is a winning combination.

Cheese and wine pairing has been around for decades, and more recently food and wine pairing was all the rage. Now it's the turn of chocolate and wine pairing to take centre stage.

Stellenbosh wine estates offer a range of chocolates to go with their wines; typically, white chocolate goes with white wine and dark chocolate is served with red.

We found a few wine farms in Stellenbosch that offer carefully selected wine and chocolate pairings.

The Waterford Estate pairs its wines with dark and milk chocolates, handmade by Von Geusau Chocolates.

Chocolatier Richard von Geusau created a series of dark and milk chocolates to be served with the Waterford Estate's Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and natural sweet wines.

Lanzerac pairs five of its premium wines with chocolate:

  • Sauvignon Blanc is paired with a white Safari Fruit chocolate
  • Chardonnay is served with a white Lemons and Limes chocolate
  • Merlot goes with a Dark Cherry Cigar chocolate
  • Pinotage is paired with a chocolate-dipped macerated cherry
  • Cabernet Sauvignon goes with a Cape Malay Spice chocolate

Children are also catered for at Lanzerac, which offers them three chocolates served with red Grapetizer.

You have to make an appointment for a chocolate and wine tasting at the historic Rudera Estate. There, the wines are paired with delicous Lindt chocolates.

Bilton Wine Estate invites its guests to a wine and Belgian chocolate tasting. Its Sauvignon Blanc is paired with white Belgian chocolate, handmade in Knysna.

If you've never considered chocolate and wine together, head over to one of the estates and try it for yourself. You'll be delighted that you did.
