Swirl, a one-of-a-kind wine and food experience!

  • September 12, 2017

Stellenbosch Vineyards is proud to announce a new addition to its wine experience with the opening of Swirl on Welmoed Farm, one of the oldest proclaimed farms in the Stellenbosch district. Swirl is an extension to its already established contemporary tasting room. Visitors can now enjoy a sensory adventure exploring the stories behind each range of the Stellenbosch Vineyards Collection of Fine Wines accompanied with an array of food styles and flavours. The venue is tastefully elevated to encourage a sociable atmosphere that portrays a sense of togetherness whilst continuing to honour the Welmoed farm’s rich winemaking history and present-day victories. In return, Swirl acts as a catalyst to blend flavours through perfect combinations of its culinary creations and award-winning wines.

The menu at Swirl was designed by chef Levinia Plaaitjies and wine makers Abraham De Villiers and Bernard Claassen. The full wine and food pairing menu includes 3 selected pairings. The jewel in the crown of Swirl’s wine and food experiences is the Winemaker’s Pairing (R340pp) - a five-course wine and food pairing that showcases the prestigious Credo range. Other pairings on the menu include the Signature Pairing (R225pp), which showcases the Stellenbosch Vineyards signature blue label range, and the Heyden’s Pairing (R155pp) that focuses on the Welmoed Heritage Selection range.  Children are also welcome with a dedicated children’s menu and an outdoor jungle gym.

The wine-makers and team of Stellenbosch Vineyards accompanied media and stakeholders to enjoy a specifically paired small menu to get a taste of the new wine and food experience. The experience started off with one of the favourites of the day, lightly smoked grilled fish cakes, micro greens and tartare sauce paired with Stellenbosch Vineyards Sauvignon Blanc 2017.  Next in line was the nutty and zesty Stellenbosch Vineyards LR Verdelho 2016, paired with ginger & lime infused prawn skewers, smoked aioli and a curry aioli.

Carpaccio duo of lightly smoked Kudu and Springbok was perfectly paired with the Stellenbosch Vineyards Bushvine Pinotage 2015. This was followed with the pairing of duo lamb rack, crusted with parmesan herb and pepper, served with sweet potato puree and the Stellenbosch Vineyards Grenache 2016 and Credo Shiraz 2015 (absolute favourite pairing!). Then, the flavours of chargrilled Rib-Eye steak, berry jus and dauphinoise potato were blended with The Flagship Petit Verdot 2012.

To top it all off, a dessert wine rich with honey overtones paired with a coconut crusted lemon curd, shortcrust biscuit and mint syrup!

“We want our guests to feel as comfortable as they would be when dining at a friend’s home,” says brand home manager Ruan Willers, “and we encourage people to spend the afternoon with their family at Swirl, returning again as friends.”

“Stellenbosch Vineyards has solidified itself as a main player in the South African wine industry,” says sales and marketing executive, Jeff Gradwell, “and Swirl befits our offering as a destination for both local and international guests visiting the Stellenbosch area.”
