Classic Cape Cuisine Walk

You will meet your guide in her red apron at Stellenbosch Wine Route office for a 10h00 prompt start.

Then head off to find the mysterious island where Stellenbosch was founded and explore the oak-lined avenues. You’ll learn to appreciate modern kitchen appliances when you pop into a family home from 1710.

Along the way you’ll visit various food and drink stops, including:

  • a rustic eatery for home-grown teas and spice-infused sweet treats
  • an artisan bakery for breadsticks
  • a family butchery for beef ‘biltong’
  • a trendy wine bar for a wine tasting
  • and finish in the luxurious, oldest hotel in the country for a traditional lunch platter.

Kayamandi Township Tour and Xhosa Lunch

Your guide will meet you at 09h45 at Stellenbosch Wine Route office for your free transfer to Kayamandi township.

In Kayamandi, she will take you on a leisurely walk to meet local artists and entrepreneurs and get insights into the lifestyle of millions of South Africans. Take your camera, as you’ll be greeted by many friendly faces.

At the end of the walk, you’ll be welcomed into a family home where you’ll help prepare simple Xhosa dishes. Then you’ll sit down for a feast of a lunch.

Around 13h, you’ll say good-bye to your new friends and be transferred back to central Stellenbosch with a full tummy and a warmed heart.

Stellenbosch Township and Village

The picturesque and historical Stellenbosch is nestled in the centre of the Cape Winelands district. The town is surrounded by culturally unique villages and “townships”, and they are inviting tourists and social explorers to visit these vibrant communities.

The Stellenbosch Township and Village (STV) tourism initiative promote inter-cultural and heritage integration through community-based walking tours. Their tours are locally hosted by participating guides, offering visitors an informative and fun tour. Their tours also highlight the history that shaped these communities and offers insight into the development and progress that South Africans are making.

This three-hour walking adventure starts and ends at the Ikhaya Trust Centre in Kayamandi, where you will meet your local resident guide, receive a historic briefing on the area, discuss your particular interest in the Township and enjoy a cup of coffee at the Amazink restaurant. The walking journey sets off in a circular route weaving through shacks and stops are made at various participating community attractions, where you can meet and chat with residents. Attractions include visiting local homes, churches, hostels, spaza shops, African barber shops, craft shops, development organisations, schools and the local taxi rank. Upon return visitors can view the Vision Afrika school within the Ikhaya Trust Centre and have the opportunity to buy locally produced craft items from the community shop.

This tour highlights the two different worlds within South Africa and offers visitors the opportunity to blend into, and experience the local way of doing things. You will meet your Kayamandi resident guide at the Stellenbosch Wine Routes tourism centre in the historic and opulent centre of Stellenbosch. From here you will walk through the leafy streets of the iconic town, towards the local taxi rank, where a traditional South African taxi is taken to the Ikhaya Trust Centre in Kayamandi, covering the 3 kilometres that divides the two worlds. Once in Kayamandi, you will set out on the Kayamandi on foot tour, and return again to the centre of Stellenbosch by taxi, to complete the round trip.
