3 Pongrácz bubblies to enjoy on Valentine’s Day
Pongrácz, one of South Africa’s leading Méthode Cap Classiques, celebrated its 25th anniversary last year. But don’t worry if you missed out on the festivities. Here are three Pongrácz bubblies to enjoy on Valentine’s Day.
Composed in the classic French tradition, this bubbly has won Best Non-Vintage MCC at the Amorim Cork Classique Challenge (2010 and 2011), Gold at the Michelangelo International Wine Awards (2011), and Gold at the Veritas Awards (2011).
“This is a timeless Cap Classique with great elegance and complexity,” says winemaker Elunda Basson. “Crisp green apple notes and nuttiness of freshly baked bread are prevalent on the nose. On the palate, delicate yeasty tones, layered with toast and ripe fruit are enlivened by a firm mousse and persistent bead that make it particularly attractive. It imparts a wonderful foamy mouthful of blackberry fruit flavours with a long lingering aftertaste. It is perfect for any occasion and is superb with chicken, seafood and oysters.”
Like the Pongrácz Brut, this bubbly is made using the two noble varieties of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. It’s also won a range of awards: Gold in Wine Pleasure’s 50 Great Sparkling Wines (2013), Top 10 at the Effervescents du Monde (2012), and Best Pink Cap Classique in FAIR LADY Consumer Awards (2012).
“This Cap Classique Rosé delights the mind as much as the eye and evokes an air of romance with its delicate salmon pink hue,” Basson says. “Delicate yeasty tones are layered with whiffs of baked bread and ripe berry fruit on the nose. On the palate it is delightfully dry with a wonderful foamy mouth full of blackberry fruit, evoking an air of romance with its delicate pink blush. This lively Cap Classique pairs beautifully with lightly dressed seafood or fruit salad rich in berry fruit and is the perfect partner for sushi.”
Last but not least is the Desiderius Pongrácz, named in honour of the Hungarian nobleman and refugee who created the brand. Not only did it win Double Gold at Six Nations Wine Challenge in 2013, but it was also the only South African contender ranked Top 10 in the world at the Effervescents du Monde competition in France last year.
“Handcrafted in a uniquely styled fluted bottle that epitomises elegance, quality and nobility, this magnificent Cap Classique encapsulates grace and exceptional character,” Basson says. “It is alluring with a rich complexity and a slight green tint that teems with light, lively bubbles and raciness on the palate. Nuances of fresh fruit, almonds and freshly baked bread delight the senses. This prestige cuvée is the ultimate pairing with fresh oysters, smoked salmon and steamed mussels. It also partners sublimely with mushroom and spinach risotto.”
